UFO UpDates Info

UFO UpDates exists because of the input of its subscribers who provide UFO-related news, information and discussion for lay people, broadcast media, journalists, authors, researchers and investigators.

In the past seven years there have been over 36,000 messages posted. The UFO UpDates Archive receives an average of 500 visits a day.

Each message is manually highlighted, copied, pasted, re-formatted, re-copied and then posted to the List by the moderator.

Yes, 'listserve' software could do the job - the potential ugliness can be seen on automated Lists, elsewhere.

The moderator's function is similar to that of print people who edit and layout 'Letters To The Editor' - creating an easy to read 'style' and layout, catching most of the typos, avoiding nastiness, off-topic messages and spam.

If you'd like to subscribe to the UFO UpDates E-Mail List send your first and last names to: ufoupdates@virtuallystrange.net and key the word 'Subscribe' in the 'Subject: ' line.

Appreciatives

"I've read this List for years and can't think of a single forum for divergent views in which I've learned more - anywhere... on anything. This is one of the very few lists that doesn't pay homage to a particular agenda, nor does it espouse a specific viewpoint. It is also a direct reflection of its participants; and those participants, whether I agree with them or not, are usually very good. Where else can you get timely insight directly from the people who have contributed most to the field? This is unheard of in university settings.

I'm now surrounded by literature written by extremely bright people addressing extremely difficult issues, and sometimes can't believe a forum exists where those very same people freely exchange ideas. Try this in most educational settings, where the players work almost in a vacuum, responses governed by economics and politics. I don't always like the message or the messenger, but _this_ List is a gem. (Research methods, for instance, are _always_ problematic.) Frustration over "lack of answers" should be directed at the phenomenon and the people studying it. A forum like this is _not_ an easy thing to put together... nor is it easy to keep together." - Bill Weber, March 2002

"I know of no other service which provides for the ufologist of today, the fresh and most recent UFO-related events, and a service which also offers one of the greatest debate forums. UFO UpDates - Toronto, moderated by Errol Bruce-Knapp is, from my point of view, in a class of its own." - Roy Hale

"I am as passionate about the UFO subject as I was thirty years ago. I must be some kind of addict. With the work of EBK and the passion of everyone who takes part in UpDates, this has become a vital forum to me. Thanks again for all your love, care, and hard work for keeping this great List going." - Josh Goldstein

"This Mail List is one of, if not the best, internet forums available." - Stephen G. Bassett

"Thank you Errol, for spending so much of your time providing us with the latest UFO news daily! You make our job a lot easier and this world a little smaller." - Andy Denne

"A person can always delete what they don't want, but at least they have the option to read or delete. I, for one, am very pleased and grateful for all your kindness and hard work which benefits all of us." - Donna Higbee

"What some percieve as "useless bickering" is a manifestation of a self-correcting/editing mechanism that is always at work here. It is in fact one of the most hopeful signs that the dialog is a "healthy" one that we are conducting. Like diamonds in the rough, we 'knock' the sharp points and corners off of each other. The List/internet allows us to get close enough to rub up against one another (our ideas and beliefs) and to polish each other as we move toward consensus. It's all give and take and a learning process that we are creating/discovering/shaping as we go along." - John Velez 7 Jul 1999
